No Black Friday Sale?

Late November is such a wonderful time of year, spending time with loved ones during Thanksgiving, telling stories and of course eating your body weight in side dishes (if you get anything from this blog feel free to comment your favorite thanksgiving side!). This time of year is also when so many people do their Christmas Shopping because who doesn’t love a discount? You can get almost anything you wanted to buy at a fraction of the original price! More recently what we know as “Black Friday” has turned into a “Black Weekend” – The discounts continue on from Friday into Saturday and Sunday and more times than not roll right into Monday which is still loosely known at “Cyber Monday”. Has anyone noticed this trend?

In the early 2000’s long before I started this company and quite frankly it was long before I even knew what I wanted to do with my life I felt like there was a routine when it came to Thanksgiving. All of the 21+ people would go our drinking the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, then on Thanksgiving day everyone would get dressed up, cook and mingle with one another while really testing the limits of how much they could eat. Thanksgiving always ended on the early side where I’m from because people needed to get home and sleep so they could head out to Wal-Mart or their favorite stores at like 9:00pm/10:00pm at night and wait in a line to win the door buster which was like a free grill master deluxe 3000 or something. Black Friday use to be a such a great time when no stores would open until 12:00am Friday, there would be lines for hours before opening as people just love a great discount and the best part was it only lasted 24hrs. But have times changed?

This year is the second year Dray-Pepe has been open and last year we ran a Black Friday advertisement that lasted the entire 4 days and brought some nice sales in. However, as of today we are still not a brick and mortar, we are strictly eCommerce so really the day we should be having a sale is Cyber Monday. As I was scrolling through our Instagram and Facebook feeds today to check out the competition it seems like all businesses both Brick and Mortar and eCommerce have started their sales on Friday and they’re lasting until Monday which makes me think about a few things:
1. Why are people still standing outside in these ridiculous lines if most businesses are allocating inventory to their online customers? You can stay inside in your PJ’s and Dray-Pepe socks buying all of the things you want for the same discount. Best part is – It will be delivered right to your door, you don’t have to do any of the heavy lifting and you won’t catch a black eye while you and some woman fight over the last pair of Christian Louboutin’s in Bloomingdales at 12:30AM
2. How is this sale any different than the sales the rest of the year? Seems like every company is claiming that this is the “Biggest Sale of the year” when I swear their biggest sale of the year was in May during their Memorial Day event.
3. What does it say about the sale or the products? I would think that having only 24 hours to purchase an item would increase the demand and limit the supply which would make it a high commodity item. If the sale is extended I would assume that the amount of product on hand would be large which would decrease the value of the item?

Now it’s possible that on the last point I was questioning the economics of the sale more than the tradition but please feel free to comment your opinions. However, my final point is that Dray-Pepe will not be offering a Black Friday (or a Black Weekend) sale this year as we are an eCommerce retail clothing business. There may be a sale on Monday in honor of Cyber Monday but you will just have to check back and see for yourself (full disclosure there will be some type of sale).
